If you followed baseball closely in the 80's, you'll recognize Dale Murphy as the sliding baserunner. The Braves played five games at Wrigley Field in 1987 -- the sixth scheduled one was postponed and not rescheduled. So which game was it?
Obviously, it's Opening Day -- that's the only time the Cubs have played the Cardinals at Wrigley with bunting on the brick wall, and the opponent is clearly St. Louis. It has to be the late 1980's or early 1990's, because of the bear logo on the sleeve.
That makes this photo from June 28, 1968; Flood singled in the first inning and stole second. The Cubs lost the game 9-5; at the time, the loss made their record 31-41, ten games under .500. The 1968 Cubs are the only team in franchise history to come from ten games under .500 and finish with a winni...
That fact would have made it nearly impossible to sleuth it out, so let's use other clues. The presence of Randy Hundley at catcher narrows it down to 1966-71. Gaylord Perry started 10 games at Wrigley Field in those six seasons. The shadows and the short sleeves worn by Hundley eliminate two e...
Charlie Root is in the middle of this photo; Root had a long and successful career with the Cubs, pitching in four World Series. He still holds the Cubs' career pitching record for victories with 201. This photo was taken on Catalina Island off the coast of California during spring training i...
The latter two both had distinguished Cubs careers and played in multiple World Series (four for Root, three for Cavarretta). So how did this group do in leading the Cubs? The information given to me with this photo indicates it was taken on April 21, 1953.
Although Kessinger and Kingman are both wearing long sleeves, the umpire isn't, and neither are the people visible in the bleachers. So this has to be a warm-weather game; also, you can't see any shadows, so it has to be a game played on a cloudy day.
While we wait for that and for the announcement of the final signings before arbitration (and maybe a couple of additions), here are some more photos from the convention. The "Sarge", Gary Matthews Left to right: WGN's Pat Hughes, Jay Johnstone, Jeff Baker
With the 25th Annual Cubs Convention kicking off today, I thought I'd post a photo of a Cubs Hall of Famer who is at every convention and who wore a Cubs uniform for more total seasons than anyone (31 years combined as player and coach), and one of my personal childhood heroes for the classy wa...
If you're familiar with old ballparks at all, the archways in the background should have given it away -- that's the old Comiskey Park, and the only time these two players would have been together at that park was the 1950 All-Star Game on July 11, 1950. The Cub is Andy Pafko, who was traded to t...
The building will be nearly as tall as the upper deck -- five or six stories -- and possibly have space underground, too. It doesn't appear that large when you look on a map, but the lot is about half the size of the footprint of Wrigley Field. This will be a large structure. Here are some rendering...
When the Ricketts family took over the Cubs in October, they announced that, among other things, the scoreboard would be getting a "facelift". Within the last week, scaffolding appeared on the back of the board (the side that faces the corner of Waveland & Sheffield). As the work conti...
From the information given to me with the photo, it was taken in April 1980. Sutter appeared in four games at Wrigley in April 1980 -- April 17 vs. the Mets, April 19 vs. the Mets, April 22 vs. the Cardinals, and April 25 vs. the Pirates. He registered three saves and a win in those four appearances.
Here's a guy Cubs fans loved to either love or hate -- Dave Kingman. When he was hitting home runs, he was very popular (Vance Fothergill, then the Cubs' organist, used to play the theme from "Exodus" when he came to bat -- supposedly, "Exodus" from the ballpark was what Kingman was supposed t...
That is, in case you didn't recognize him, Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg. The Cubs wore these throwback uniforms only once -- for the very first interleague game played in Chicago, vs. the White Sox on the South Side on June 16, 1997. The White Sox decided to wear their 1917 World Cha...
The hitter is Jim Hickman and the photo was taken on July 23, 1970. Hickman, though always a good hitter, was never at All-Star level -- except in 1970, one of the bigger fluke seasons in recent major league history. He set career highs that year -- by huge margins -- in runs, HR, RBI, doubles, wa...
The stadium in question is Dodger Stadium -- although they have retired number banners and ads on the outfield wall now, that was the only ballpark at the time to have those sorts of numbers on the walls. At the time Dodger Stadium was only in its fourth season; it is now the third-oldest park i...
The Cubs lost the game to the Braves 4-3, in what was a matchup of future Hall of Famers -- Phil Niekro vs. Fergie Jenkins. Jenkins was 20-11 after that game; he wound up 24-13 and won the Cy Young Award. The 24 wins matches Larry Jackson (1964) for the most wins by a Cubs pitcher since 1927 (Charlie...
But that's not Boccabella -- it's Terry Humphrey, who was an Expos backup catcher from 1971-74. He played in only two Wrigley Field games that Cardenal also played in -- April 7, 1973 and the second game of a doubleheader on April 13, 1974 (I was actually at that doubleheader).
I'll give you the identity of the three players in this photo; it should be fairly easy, with a little digging, to figure out when it was taken. They are: Bill Bonham, Vic Harris and Billy Williams. Billy Williams had started playing 1B in 1973 after his outfield mobility was reduced and playe...
This photo was taken on the date of the last NFL game played at Wrigley Field, a 35-17 Bears win over the Packers on December 13, 1970. Wrigley Field held the record for hosting the most regular-season NFL games (365) until 2003. Giants Stadium passed it that year, but only because both the Gia...
Again, this is obviously not a player you would have chosen to add to your team in a perfect world. The Milton Bradley situation was about as far from "perfect world" as you could get. The $6 million in salary relief, we hope, will allow Jim Hendry to add some help in CF (hey, how about a Ryan Churc...
Cubs Historic Photos: Fifth In A Series blog) I believe you are seeing the exterior brick wall of Wrigley Field, the old wall, which, of course — backed onto Waveland Avenue. ...
Ernie's 2nd-inning HR made the score 2-1 Atlanta. The teams traded single runs in the seventh, and the Cubs were three outs away from a 3-2 loss when Billy Williams homered off Hoyt Wilhelm -- who would pitch briefly for the Cubs later that year. The Cubs won 4-3 in the 11th on a Ron Santo single w...
Clue #1: no ivy on the walls and people in the bleachers in coats -- so it had to be early in the season, likely April. The Cubs played the Expos -- it can't be any other team, with that jersey -- two games at Wrigley in April 1970, on the 17th and 18th. That was a Friday and Saturday; a Sunday game was r...
Divisional play began in 1969, and although the Reds were and are in the Eastern time zone, east of Chicago, they wound up in the NL West. Apparently, the presence of the Braves and Reds in the NL West was due to the influence of the Cubs; the Cubs wanted to be in the same division with the Cardina...
Recently, I was introduced to Leo Bauby, who owns a very large collection of historic Chicago sports photos, including hundreds of Cubs photos from the 1960's and 1970's. They were taken by a photographer primarily working for the Sporting News and Baseball Digest. Leo has graciously gra...
The result of this at-bat was a fly to left field -- Duke Snider made the first two outs in that inning. The Cubs lost the game 13-7; it was the ninth loss of a ten-game losing streak for that awful Cubs team which set the club record for losses with 103 (tied four years later).
Aerial view of Wrigley Field in the early 1930's. Still no alcove on the building. Note the field being resodded. Wrigley Field in 1938, just after the brick-walled bleachers were built -- a clear view of the Ricketts ad on the roof of the building.
No, this isn't about Ron Santo. Last year, we did an occasional series of "Name That Cub", where you had to identify a Cubs player from the past from an old photo. It was fun, but in general, too easy -- because most of the photos I used were from the last three or four decades.
Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Carlos Marmol celebrates his closing of a game for the 2009 Chicago Cubs. Can the Cubs expect to see more of this in 2010? (AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh) The Chicago Cubs are relying on Carlos Marmol to be their closer in 2010. Is this a good idea?
Only one player -- Ryan Dempster, who is living here in Chicago all winter -- attended the news conference. For his part, Dempster seemed impressed with Ricketts and his commitment to Chicago, the team and the ballpark. Dempster himself -- one of the few Cubs in recent years to live year-rou...

Cubs All Time 9 I was wondering if anybody did the Cubs team version of "All-Time9" over at mlb.com??? What seasons/players did you pick? Was there any seasons/players not on the list you felt should have been? What about other teams? I’m just interested in what everyone picked…

It's been a frustrating season; with four of the seven games remaining to be played in October, this might have been the last bit of nice summer-like weather we'll have for baseball on the north side of Chicago in 2009. It may not mean anything, but I do hope the Cubs can at least win the series i...

That's right, ledge-jumpers. Despite the Cubs' horrendous road trip (2-7 so far), they can come home with a series win by defeating the Pirates this evening. With the work Randy Wells has done so far, I'd give them a pretty good chance of doing just that. And the Brewers just lost to the Mets 1-0...
The second point, brought out in Wittenmyer's article, is more disturbing and more direct: Piniella ordered Bradley to the clubhouse and followed him -- with Carlos Zambrano joining him -- through the tunnel from the dugout. According to sources, Piniella then shouted at Bradley, "You...
Today marks the beginning of the Cubs' first interleague series. Since the Central Division teams in each league will be playing each other, there will be opportunities for the Cubs and White Sox to help each other out by defeating the opponents in the other's division. Will you be rooting f...
